Meet Our Team
Dr. Rick Scherr
Dr. Rick Scherr founded Big Sky Animal Medical Center in 1996. He is a 1989 graduate of Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He has previous experience at practices in New Orleans, LA, Bozeman and Great Falls.
Dr. Scherr did a surgical internship at All-Care Animal Referral Center in Fountain Valley, CA from 2002 to 2003. He then went on to attend Slocum Enterprises TPLO program in 2003. Since then he has performed over 3000+ of these surgeries. In 2005 he attended the BioMedtrix Total Hip Replacement course and has performed over 300+ of these surgeries. Dr. Scherr received training on placement of intra-tracheal stents in 2007. In 1999 Dr. Scherr was certified to freeze canine semen through Synbiotics and in 2004 became an AKC-approved center.
Dr. Scherr’s professional interests include orthopedics, neurosurgery and soft tissue surgery. He performs referral surgery at Big Sky Animal Medical Center and travels for surgery in western Montana.
Dr. Brandon Harmon
Dr. Brandon Harmon joined the veterinary staff of Big Sky Animal Medical Center in July of 2007.
He is a graduate of Mississippi State University. His professional interests include small animal surgery and medicine, reproduction and ophthalmology.
Dr. Helen Grasseschi
Dr. Helen Grasseschi joined the veterinary staff of Big Sky Animal Medical Center in September of 2003.
Dr. Grasseschi is a 1999 graduate of Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She has previous experience at small animal/exotic practices in Spokane, WA and Glendale, AZ.
Dr. Grasseschi enjoys management of medical cases and wellness programs.
Dr. Doug Ward
Dr. Doug Ward is a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and is board certified in surgery. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University in 1980 and completed a surgical residency and post-doctorate degree from Purdue University in 1986.
Originally from Great Falls, Dr. Ward has practiced in numerous states and Canada as well as his home state of Montana. His main interests are general and orthopedic surgery including arthroscopic surgery.
Dr. Ward also consults and performs equine surgical procedures with local area veterinarians as well as across Montana.
Dr. Jani Zirbel
Dr. Jani Zirbel has been with Big Sky Animal Medical Center since September 2009. She graduated from the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984 and practiced in North Carolina and Virginia before moving out west in 2004.
Her experience has been in general practice and emergency/critical care and is a weekend emergency doctor at Big Sky Animal Medical Center.
Dr. Zirbel lives in Missoula with her children and their many pets, horses and sheep.
Dr. Michelle Richardson
Dr. Michelle Richardson is a 1992 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Her practice experience includes partnership in a successful AAHA practice in Asheville, N.C.
She received certification in veterinary acupuncture through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society in 1994, and in 2011 became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner through the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine.
Her practice interests include preventive care, geriatrics, integrative medicine and rehabilitation therapy.
Dr. Matt Blandford
Dr. Blandford graduated from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2009.
He worked in Helena, Montana as a small animal general practitioner for five years before joining Big Sky Animal Medical Center in 2014.
His professional interests include small animal emergency medicine, critical care, and medicine and surgery of exotic pets and wildlife.
